"Koirankynnen leikkaaja" - aka: "Dog Nail Clipper" (2004)
This movie, written and directed by Markku Pölönen is based on the 1980 novel by the same name and written by Veikko Huovinen. It is the story of a soldier named Mertsi (played by Peter Franzén) who suffers a permanent brain injury in World War II. In the latter part of the 1940's, as Mertsi wanders the Finnish countryside looking for work and relying on the help of others, he is befriended by Eetvi Manninen (played by Taisto Teimaluoto) and Ville (played by Ahti Kuoppala) who tells him about his dog back home, a clever female Finnish Spitz named Sakke (portrayed by Korpisaran Tuuli), whose overgrown dewclaws cause her problems. The two men help Mertsi find work at their jobs, which proves too strenuous for Mertsi. During the night Mertsi suffers from nightmares and during the day he daydreams and worries about the dog.
In 2004-2005 the Dog Nail Clipper was nominated for a Jussi award for Best Set Design (Minna Santakari). Markku Pölönen won an Anjalankoski Film Prize at the 2005 Anjalankoski Film Sunday, Audience Award at the 2004 Hamburg Film Festival; Jussi Awards - Best Director, Best Movie (director), Best Script; and Audience Award at the 2004 Rouen Nordic Film Festival. Additionally, Peter Franzén won a Best Actor Award; Kari Sohlberg won Best Film Award, and Kari Sara won Producer Award at the 2005 Jussi Awards.
